What You’ll Do
As a Tax Manager within the Tax-Exempt practice, you will spend at least half (potentially up to 100%) of your time serving nonprofit clients, including health care providers or plans, private foundations, public charities, higher education institutions, and other nonprofit organizations. Your time will be focused on providing tax compliance and consulting services, including restructuring, acquisition planning, tax controversy, philanthropic tax planning, unrelated business tax consulting, and more. You will work directly with sophisticated clients, manage the tax engagement team, have access to an elite group of specialists when needed, and be connected to a strong support system from firm leadership to ensure you are set up for success in your role and career. As part of the Tax-Exempt practice, you will interact and work with like-minded Tax-Exempt specialists from across the country on a regular basis.
Responsibilities will include:
- Maintaining and developing strong client relationships on various federal tax consulting/compliance engagements.
- Advising clients on a variety of tax issues, including tax compliance, business restructuring, exemption strategies, philanthropic and charitable giving planning, and tax controversy.
- Overseeing federal, international, and state tax compliance and consulting projects requiring tax analysis for a variety of entities and their affiliates.
- Managing engagement workflow, engagement team resources, and engagement billing.
- Providing technical training, leadership, counseling, and career guidance for the development and motivation of the engagement team.
The Team
We have a large national team of dedicated, experienced professionals committed to serving nonprofit organizations and sophisticated donors. Our practice includes partners, managing directors, and professionals who specialize in federal tax compliance (Form 990/990-PF), multistate tax compliance, international tax compliance and consulting, and transfer tax planning.
The tax group regularly teams with our Consulting, Audit & Assurance, and Advisory colleagues on client planning projects. Some of our team members are fully dedicated to serving nonprofit clients, and others also specialize in Private Wealth or Corporate business tax services.
Deloitte’s Global Center for Excellence in Philanthropy (“GCEP”): This is a cross-functional team comprised of tax, audit, and consulting professionals from Deloitte’s Monitor Institute. The GCEP serves innovative individuals, companies, and nonprofits working to drive societal change. Our team has spent decades providing philanthropic tax advisory services to some of the wealthiest and most sophisticated donors in the world.

Qualifications
Required
- Ability to perform job responsibilities within a hybrid work model that requires US Tax professionals to co-locate in person 2–3 days per week
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, or other business-related field
- 5+ years of experience in federal taxation with a strong emphasis on tax-exempt organizations (501(c)(3)s and 501(c)(4)s), including a combination within health care providers, health plans, private foundations, and other community organizations
- Limited immigration sponsorship may be available.
- Ability to travel 25%, on average, based on the work you do and the clients and industries/sectors you serve.
- One of the following active accreditations obtained:
- Licensed CPA in state of practice/primary office if eligible to sit for the CPA
- If not CPA eligible:
- Licensed Attorney
- Enrolled Agent
- Certifications:
- Chartered Financial Advisor (CFA)
- Certified Financial Planner (CFP)
Preferred
- Advanced degree such as Master of Tax, JD, and/or LLM
- Previous Big 4 or large CPA firm experience
- Experience with federal tax compliance (Form 990 and 990-PF), tax analysis, and tax research
- Solid understanding with respect to issues specific to tax-exempt organizations (unrelated business income, exemption planning, etc.)
- Strong verbal and written communication; listening, interpersonal, and facilitation skills
The wage range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs. The disclosed range estimate has not been adjusted for the applicable geographic differential associated with the location at which the position may be filled. At Deloitte, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $107,925 to $205,000.
You may also be eligible to participate in a discretionary annual incentive program, subject to the rules governing the program, whereby an award, if any, depends on various factors, including, without limitation, individual and organizational performance.
