Are you an experienced, passionate pioneer in technology who wants to work in a collaborative environment? As an experienced Middleware Operations & Engineering Lead, you will have the ability to share new ideas and collaborate on projects as a consultant without the extensive demands of travel. If so, consider an opportunity with Deloitte under our Project Delivery Talent Model. Project Delivery Model (PDM) is a talent model that is tailored specifically for long-term, onsite client service delivery.
Work you’ll do/Responsibilities
Provide 24x7x365 middleware operations and engineering support across web and application middleware platforms enabling integrated business services. Partner with application teams, infrastructure teams, and vendors to monitor platform health, respond to incidents, fulfill requests and changes, and lead troubleshooting and performance optimization. Improve stability and security through patching, upgrades, modernization/migrations, security hardening, and automation, including self-healing and standardized provisioning—while consistently meeting agreed service-level objectives (SLOs) and audit requirements.
24x7 Operations (Run)
- Monitor middleware platforms and integrated services; execute incident response, triage, restoration, and escalation.
- Own service request and change fulfillment; ensure tickets meet response and resolution SLAs.
- Perform routine health checks, availability validation, and operational readiness checks.
Platform Health, Currency & Capacity (Maintain)
- Maintain platform currency: patching, fix packs, interim fixes, and runtime environment support.
- Perform capacity management (resource baselines, growth forecasting, tuning recommendations).
- Proactively identify bottlenecks; optimize middleware configurations for stability and performance.
Troubleshooting, RCA & Reliability (Improve)
- Lead deep-dive troubleshooting: log analysis, thread/heap diagnostics, connection analysis, and failure domain isolation.
- Drive root cause analysis (RCA) and implement permanent fixes; document known errors and runbooks.
- Coordinate war rooms for critical outages and manage technical communications to stakeholders.
Middleware Configuration & Runtime Enablement (Build/Enable)
- Support deployments and runtime validation with application teams; verify configuration, dependencies, and post-deploy health.
- Support integrations with enterprise systems: databases, Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), single sign-on (SSO).
Security, Certificates & Compliance (Protect)
- Manage Secure Sockets Layer / Transport Layer Security (SSL/TLS) certificates and related configuration updates.
- Implement security hardening, vulnerability remediation, and secure configuration standards.
- Provide middleware-level audit/compliance support (evidence collection, control implementation, and remediation tracking).
- Configure and administer user roles, groups, and access controls (least privilege, separation of duties).
Upgrades, Modernization & Migrations (Transform)
- Plan and execute upgrades/patching for IBM WebSphere and related products; manage cutovers and rollback plans.
- Architect and deliver migrations of existing instances (environment strategy, dependency mapping, risk management, validation).
Automation & Tooling (Automate)
- Develop automation/scripting for provisioning, monitoring, and self-healing workflows using IBM and open-source tooling.
- Standardize repeatable operational tasks (certificate renewals, health checks, restart orchestration, config drift detection).
- Improve observability (dashboards/alerts) and reduce mean time to detect/resolve (MTTD/MTTR).
Communication and Collaboration
- Communicate regularly with Engagement Managers (Directors), project team members, and representatives from various functional and / or technical teams, including escalating any matters that require additional attention and consideration from engagement management
- Independently and collaboratively lead client engagement workstreams focused on improvement, optimization, and transformation of processes including implementing leading practice workflows, addressing deficits in quality, and driving operational outcomes
